Default Key Word Density?

Has anyone dabbled with KW density and noticed a point at which too high a
density loses position?

I have been playing around with KW's using SEOquake on our home page after
rankings have been declining fairly steadily over the last few months.

Just wondered what the groups thoughts are on this issue?

Cheers
Pete

and following on....

If I wanted to aim for maximum relevance for the terms "fitness equipment" and
"gym equipment" should "gym" "fitness" "equipment" all rank as equals or
should I drop "equipment" slightly?

Obviously I am aware of the relevance of key word back-links etc.

If you get a friend to read your copy, and they laugh, your KW density is
too high.

You can even do it yourself - read out loud, and you'll soon learn when
you've overdone it.

If your content is good quality, KW density tends to take care of itself.

A waste of time. Time you can better use (IMNSHO) to find synonyms
and other ways to write about the topic on the same page. That way you
might find a niche that gives you more hits than trying to optimize for a
handful of keywords (I am sometimes amazed at how some pages of mine are
found, and how my ideas of good keywords don't agree with that of my
visitors :-D)

You could look into less usage of the direct terms and more usage of
synonyms etc. Get the thesaurus out.

I'd say it's possible but dependant upon other factors. There won't be
a fixed level at which it becomes spam.

What I have noticed is that if you keep your KW density below 10% you
are good.

I have noticed that if your KW density is more than 10% it will affect
you badly.

It's not that simple; there's many factors involved, including page size,
'shared' content, etc., etc.
There is not "one right answer".
